What are the ways in which we can improve grading system in indian middle schools?
-
There are a lot of problems with the education system in India overall, no doubts. But the thing that gets me is the really really wrong grading system in Indian secondary schools. A very small percentage of the population is truly genius. We all know from lots of stories that true genius almost always shows up to the world, no matter how much resistance the society offers them. My question pertains to the general population of students, the mediocre. I guess all of you will agree with me when I say the subjects till standard X/XII are not technically "subjects". Physics is much much more complex in reality than what the standard X books tell us. This applies to all the others as well. The subjects till standard X/XII are more of a "window to what this field is like"... The goal of any education system till standard X/XII is to show the kids what this particular field is like. Then the student should choose the field(s) he is interested in and good at, move ahead with it to do some good for the society and himself! What troubles me is the stupid way of grading students even after knowing this. Only a genius can be expected to be interested in and excel at all the subjects. The rest will have interest in one, maybe two. Consider a weight balance, when you put weight on one side, the other side is BOUND to come up. Same is with students. If he/she is marvellous at Civil Sciences. I dont really expect them to be good in chemistry etc. It's GOOD that they are not so good in chemistry. Let the student continue with civil sciences if he is truly interested, why should he also excel at quadratic equations to be an A+. Note, I've used the word EXCEL. I'm not saying this kid shouldn't study maths and physics, he should and should get average marks, but he really doesn't need to excel in it. An excellent result in his one or two favourite subject(s) and average in the others - that is a REAL A+ STUDENT. And who do our schools grade as A+?? The guy who is getting 95% in all the subjects!! Seriously?! You have to be the likes of Da Vinci to be interested in and excel at EVERYTHING. No offence to anyone but these are not A+ grade students at all , they are mugged up zombies. I see parents tell about there Xth standard kid - "he is awesome at history, civics, geography, maths, physics, chemistry, biology....".REALLY??! Do you not see how INCREDIBLY STUPID this sounds!! How incredibly detailed each of these fields is....he CANNOT be good at everything! In fact, he has be a genius to excel at even THREE different subjects....and these are our A+ kids! They are nothing more than a farmer's donkey, tie a plank...it will sow the field, tie a cart...it will carry goods. Similarly, go mug up history...done. Mug up physics...done.. Do they really get any of the subjects! NO! Does he really understand why attacks of the Afgans in India were from the north west. How did the British manage to manipulate the Indian population in the 1800. Why did no attack ever started from southern India....NO. Ask any A+ history kid these questions, and they most probably wont be able to answer it....then how are they A+!!?? Similarly ask the physics A+ kid what he knows about Higgs Boson...chances are he wont know!! A guy relly intersted in physics would have surely followed it on the web.. When we label these kids as A+...the true A+ population suffers. They are not given resources and acknowledgement they need, through which they can actually do some good in the society. A lot of questions can be raised, like how do we grade then to find out a guy's real involvement and in the subject etc....Well it's just a thought. I don't know the perfect way to improve the grading system, but I'm dead sure that this isn't the best we can do....So any remarks on my thought as well as any of you thoughts towards the answer are welcome...
