What are the top project management methodologies?

Why would someone need to change project management methods?

  • The following job vacancy for Budget Analyst includes this requirement towards the end of the description: https://jacobsexternal-jacobstechnology.icims.com/jobs/13644/budget-analyst/job "Must be knowledgeable in...project management and IT methodologies...easily transitioning from one methodology to the other." So why wouldn't one approach to managing a project suffice for the entire project?

  • Answer:

Project management is not "one size fits all". Different methods are appropriate for different types of projects. Some factors which influence the decision would be size of project, duration, number of resources, location of resources, experience level, level of trust, cost of project, inherent risk, skill of project manager, type of project, complexity of project, novelty of project, among many others. A large organization with a lot of diversity should be using different methods where appropriate. Blindly using a blanket approach - without tailoring - can be a bad idea.

I believe that one approach to management of your project should be carried over the whole span of a project. There is no other way to really measure the effectiveness and efficiency of that method unless it has been used. It also depends on the length of a project - if the project takes months and years to finalize then it may be plausible to change the methodology throughout, however for smaller projects that last up to 3 months I see no reason to switch up your methods in the middle of ongoing project. The job may also require a bunch of even smaller projects thus different methodologies can be used for each to evaluate which one is the best. That is only assuming that each project has similar nature. Like Jack Dahlgren said, one methodology doesn't fit all projects. Different projects will often call for different methodologies used based on various factors.
