Received a job offer at another company - should I take it?
-
My background. Graduated in 2010 - since then my experience is with 3 companies - my fathers construction company (6 months), a high end residential construction company (6 months), and my current employer in commercial construction (1 year 6 months). Current situation: I feel underpaid by about 10K. My employer does not have a software program for project management - and it drives me crazy - because it makes everything more difficult and time consuming. My review was given by head people in the company - not my direct boss - and it was clear it was rushed together and not accurate at all. How can these guys judge my performance when I don't work with them and they don't have any involvement with my projects. The review made me pretty mad for a while - I was told I my ranking was in the lower half of the company and they told me the names top 2 performers in the company - which since being told this - I despise. Since the review I have been told recently by my direct employer he has seen a great improvement in my performance - then again - this guy isn't going to conduct my review at the end of the year. There is no strong leadership in the company - no training. Also everyone seems so busy all the time and overwhelmed - and this spreads quickly. Job Offer- Received an offer for another company - larger in size - much larger in size. They have better benefits (health care, 401K matching (current employer doesnt match), more training, more complex projects (better learning opportunities). I was offered 8K higher than my current salary. The company is in the top tier in terms of revenue from construction - and they work on some large interesting projects - like hospitals, stadiums, and the like. If I chose to leave I would need to stay with the new employer for at least 3 years (since since graduation I have switched companies a lot and it will put me in a real situation for future jobs/ Side Note- I have interned for a company that I would love to work for and I feel that it would be a great fit. The problem is - I feel they don't have any interest in me. I emailed the HR guy a while back - and he said he would let me know if anything comes up. No news. With that I am planning to call the manager I directly worked with and ask him if he can help me get a job there. I checked theyre website - they are hiring for the position I am looking for. My options Option 1 - Accept offer - move forward with new company for at least 3-5 years. Options 2- Reject offer - stick around and hope that the company I interned for will hire me. (most ideal) Option 3 - Look for another 2-3 companies that I would really like to work for. The risk- not receiving a job offer for another 3 months to a year or longer and being stuck at my employer. Option 4 - Just stick it out with my company and be positive. Maybe they will evolve and get a software program. My seniority will increase the longer I stay. I will have to ignore my complaints I have above and focus on the positives of my company (even though I am having a hard time trying to come up with any - the company is getting lots of work and projects (IMO due to great marketing by owners). Possibly I could get more responsibilities, larger better projects. Any suggestions, thoughts from your experience?

Answer:
Don't stay at your current job. People tend to think things will get better n these type of situations, but speaking from my own experience, they don't. Things will not get better, no matter how hard you try. I say, take the job offer. You have a job security for the next 3 yearq, which aint that bad considering you switched jobs several times. You don't want hiring managers to think you are a job hopper. Besides, could it be any worse? If youre not having fun at your next job, at least you will not have fun and get paid properly, instead of not having fun and being paid poorly. So it can only get better if you ask me.

I think you actually need to do both 2 & 3 for best results and 1 if you run out of time. You need to continue to push with the company you interned with in terms of exploring further. Call the manager. Ask for his advice and anything you can do to improve your chances of being hired there since it sounds like that organization is your favorite. That being said, you cannot afford to wait too long as I'm sure there is a deadline on your current offer. Also, the 3 year commitment is really a plus for you to keep your resume from making you appear to be a job hopper going forward based on how you described it.
