What other job titles are appropriate when "technician" isn't right and "engineer" isn't right either?

Suppose someone is way overqualified to be a technician, knowing too much theory, math, and having advanced hands-on and design skills, but OTOH does not have even a Bachelor's degree in the field (or any engineering field), membership in an engineering society or have any other widely accepted official recognition as an engineer. For such purposes as writing a resume, biography, business card etc. what terms could such a person use?
