Why did the Vivendi Universal merger fail?
-
A decade ago, Jean Marie Messier engineered an audacious media merger that combined network access with content and distribution. What caused this effort to fail?
-
Answer:
A couple of things. First, it was intended as a response to the AOL-Time Warner merger--and we know how well that went. Second, the network in question was mobile, well before 3G, so there was no way it could deliver a decent user experience. And third, Messier proved not only to have a wildly premature strategy but to be an erratic CEO--which is why Edgar Bronfman Jr., who had contributed Universal Pictures, Studios, and Music to the merger, ultimately led a boardroom coup.
