How can I get my lips swelling to go away?

During summer when I go out for a walk or there is long hours of exposure in the sun, the area around my lips get sun burnt. It starts off with a small swelling on the side of my lip then the area around the lips become red & dry. I experience pulling of my skin when I talk. What can I do?

  • Answer:

It would be a good idea to see a dermatologist for this. Actinic keratosis lesions can occur on the lips as well as other skin areas. These are pre-cancerous lesions. If the area is tender, herpes simplex can be brought out by the sun and cause the symptoms you describe. There are sun screens made specifically for the lips. I would advise getting one of these (they come in tubes like lipstick). Apply frequently, especially after eating or drinking. At least every hour while in the sun. And wear a hat as much as possible. This answer is not a substitute for professional medical advic...

Make sure you put sunscreen on your lips too, this should take care of it.  If it doesn't, it isn't a sunburn and likely some reaction brought on by the sunlight or the heat.  If you use any facial lotions or take any medications, I'd check them for any contraindications to sun exposure.
