Best science minor to take?

How can a non-tenure professor at Stanford (who is not in computer science) best take advantage of the resources that are particular to Stanford in order to advance his or her career?

  • I will let you interpret "career" as you prefer, whether academic or towards industry. If you will address a career in industry, please recall that I am talking about a professor who is not in computer science, and so his or her talents don't transfer directly to an industry job.

  • Answer:

A professor who is not in computer science?! How did that happen? Anyway, sit in on a range of professional school classes to discover some new perspective(s) that gives you a buzz. Meet life science, engineering, design, etc. students and spend a day with them at lab, workbench, etc, and ask them how your field can help them. I.e., maybe you are not an "Ancien regime" French prof, but a fantastic writer who loves design. Take colleagues and others out for beers and reality-test your ideas about how see yourself operating in the field. Talk to career placement people about trends and emerging fields 5-10 years down the road and head there. Get moving.
