Physical Therapy: What type of exercises should I do if I have chronic tight neck and shoulder muscles, low back pain and a history of wrist tendinitis?
-
I've had low back pain for over 15 years, and strained trapezius and neck muscles for over 10. I'm a healthy weight but quite weak. My neck hurts when I do sit ups or use a foam roller. I suspect I need to strengthen my core to help my back but everything I do hurts and I hear that if you feel pain, you should stop or do it lighter. A lot if yoga positions hurt my wrists because they are sensitive from past injury. Do I need physical therapy or can I fix myself? Any help and direction would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:
I would certainly see a Doctor or Physio before beginning an exercise regime. Once you've done this and they say it's safe for light exercise, I'd start with very basic, beginner's Pilates. It helped with my back pain by strengthening my core. If you want to do situps without hurting your neck, rest your head on a towel on the floor. With both hands hold either corner and roll up to do a crunch. As long as you hold on tight, the towel will support your neck. Hope you feel better soon!

I see that you have a complete bouque of musculoskeletal conditions. It's really bad that you suffer for so many years and never found a good way of dealing with these issues. There is a way, though. Dynamic neuromuscular stabilization (DNS) is a non-surgical physical therapy method based on developmental kinesiology. Developmental kinesiology is a science of maturation of the human movement system during the time of early development from birth until the child starts walking. To make a long story short, a DNS doctor can teach your body to function normally by using patterns your body developed in early childhood. DNS will definetely help you with LPB, neck and shoulder pain. Wrist tendinitis is more tricky - you'll need to have extracorporeal shockwave therapy and conventional physical therapy to solve this pain. I hope you have a DNS clinic in your region. Good luck.
