How many paying users equal product market fit for a niche SaaS product (market size of 60k users total)?

I've built a little SaaS product for a niche market that is starting to gain paying customers. Paid user churn is about 50% as I iron out issues, tweak features, etc. At what point in terms of paying users do you know you've got product-market-fit and begin to focus on the sales engine (opposed to more features and other stuff)?

Firstly, congratulations! You've reached a level in the game of startups many products fail to. To answer your question, I personally believe that acquiring ANY number of paid users show that there is value in the product and thereby proving the product market fit; making your question a bit rhetorical. That said, product market fit metrics can be completely flexible and depends on your product and your competition. You say it is a niche product for a niche market, maybe you can measure yourself with your closest existing competition and their sign up rate or revenue rate within the same measure of time. If there is no competition, equate it against the market size and see if you have captured a reasonable size of the market (e.g: 2% of a $10mn market). That should hopefully help you gauge how far you have come and whether there is prudence in continuing along the path.

I think balancing cashflows and maintaining recurring users are as important. Technically one user = one user but effectively if they are strong recurring ones, they may bring exponential referrals too. For different product, the measurement of PMF is different and money isnt always the best metrics, although its a good resultant effect to watch for. For example Dropbox is easy to use and syncs files in folders. Those are the metrics, not by how much money people spend to subscribe. Because there are also free users (Who may or may not turn into paying ones). But product meets the market problems and needs. 2 links to check: Mark Andressen on PMF: http://www.stanford.edu/class/ee204/ProductMarketFit.html David Skok on SaaS metrics: http://www.forentrepreneurs.com/saas-metrics-2/
