Why must engineering undergraduates take a course in economics?

  • Most colleges include economics as a course for undergraduates. Are there any applications of economics specially in fields like Metallurgical Engg./ Chemical Engg. etc?

  • Answer:

This is because at some point in life, these undergraduate are going to be managers. Though most of the managers today don't have a MBA so they are engineering graduates. The study of economics, financial management, industrial management helps in building the base for their future role. Also it gives them a secondary approach to manufacturing. All the students graduating don't necessarily accept a job offer. Manyb of them start their own business it join their father's firm. So this helps a lot. Gives a new scope to an old establishment.

Like an Electrical Engineer would find a Basic level Mechanical Engineering course useful, a mechanical engineer a basic computer engineering course. Economics is also something that ties closely to Engineering. For any engineer it is important to understand how money and economies work. Economics also uses a lot of mathematical and engineering concepts and applies it from daily transactions and international trade deals. Since transactions are a part of everyday life the student would find it easy to relate to and would find simple application of these mathematical principles. Economics is a strong science with strong links to all forms of Engineering.
