What are some of the private architecture universities?

I will be joining a Masters program in Computer Engineering at one of the top universities in the USA (Computer Architecture-top 10) in Fall 2014. What steps should I take to improve my profile for PhD?

I am basically a PhD reject offered a masters seat. I don't have papers published in any good conferences/journals (local ones which aren't so reputed). GRE scores are great. My target universities are - ==Pretty much out of reach but I want to give a shot== 1>UC Berkeley 2>CMU 3> Stanford ==Ambitious== 1>Gatech 2> U of Michigan 3> Purdue 4>USC 5>UT Austin ==Less Ambitious== 1>ASU 2>U of Utah Would love an answer from a PhD at any of these universities.

I am not a PhD but I know a friend who opted for MS and was offered a PhD. Reasons- maintaining a good GPA with great research work and strong and keen interest in the project and research area of the professors.
