Your laptop should be able to detect other networks. Go to Control Panel- Networks and Internet- Network and sharing centre- Connect to a network. There you will see a list of all available networks in your area. Adding an antenna will achieve nothing. Be aware that public networks are not secure like your home one is. So hacking may occur. I hope you have a decent AV installed. If not download Microsoft's freebie. See link.

You could install a usb wifi adapter to extend your laptops range of networks you can see but chances are the open WiFi connections you are intending to connect to have a limited range and extenders arent very useful yet. Cheers
