Finding a Bartender Job?

How do I cope with earning, as a programmer, half than a bartender in the USA?

  • I studied a CS degree in the USA. I returned back to my home -to a third world country- and the best jobs I can find here is $8K USD per year. About half of what a bartender makes in the USA and there are no better opportunities. Finding this job already took me 2+ years. I thought that by going after a better education I would have better opportunities, so I find this disheartening and question whether studying abroad was worth it to begin with. Do you think I am asking too much? Should I just accept my fate? What course of action would you suggest? By the way $8K here do not allow you to purchase a lot more than $8K in the USA. Only rent is much cheaper, but everything else is the same or even more expensive.

  • Answer:

You have to tell which country you are from. If its India then $8K per year sounds really low and there are booming opportunities. Why didn't you find a job in US? Why did it take you 2 years to find a job.

Other answers

You should compare yourself to other professions in the location you are at. One of the most important factors in salaries is Cost of living and bartenders earn as much as they do in US because the cost of living is high in US compared to third world countries. If you are not satisfied with what you are earning, then you can try getting a job on US rates while working remotely.
