What school should I go to for an online/distance MS in computer science?
-
I have done B.Tech in computer science. Working as a software engineer in India. Wish to to get a grad degree, but can't afford to leave my job. I am planning to do distance MS. I am confused between Bits Pilani MS or some US-MS like Udacity's OMS by G.Tech. or Illinois' online program. Can anybody suggest the pros and cons of the above. Are there any other good distance programs I am missing ? Following are the pros and cons I listed, for Bits Pilani WILP: 1. [PRO] Bits Pilani WILP is accredited in India, so I can even go for PHD in India, if I wish to in future. 2. [PRO] Bits Pilani has a good brand value in India, so it will be easier to be seen by the recruiters (tier-1 recruiters, say, Google/Microsoft, etc.). Whereas, in regard to US universities, I think many recruiters in India might not be knowing the brand value of say, G.Tech. (Although, G.Tech. degree will have better brand value in USA job market.) 3. [CON] I feel the quality of education of an MS by a top US school will generally be better than that provided by say, Bits Pilani. 4. [CON] I feel Udacity's MOOC will be more interactive, as far as peer group, interaction with teachers, etc is concerned. 5. [PRO] I feel Bits Pilani will have better infrastructure here, as far as examination/proctoring centres are concerned, which I think would be harder to establish & maintain by US universities. Is there anything I am over-looking ? Also, I am not very sure, how strongly, distance MS is considered by recruiters?

Answer:
I think BITS Pilani is great option. As per your details, the pros outweigh the cons. I have had colleagues with Masters from Pilani, and they have great skills. If you plan to move abroad, then you may consider a US university MS.

This *may* not be applicable to you if you already have a BS in Computer Science, but depending on what you're looking to do with more education it might be relevant.I'm the cofounder and CEO of a company called Bloc, and we recently launched a program called The Software Engineering Track. We call it the modern CS degree, and it's broken up into four high level phases: Rails Web Development Frontend Web Development Software Engineering Principles Data Structures Algorithms Web Framework Architecture Design Patterns Open Source Apprenticeship Work with a software engineering mentor to contribute to open source software. My cofounder and I are graduates from the engineering school at the University of Illinois, it's one of the top engineering programs in the US and a lot of grads go to work at Silicon Valley tech companies. We asked friends of ours who are engineers at companies like Google, Facebook, and Twitter to help us design this program and incorporated their feedback into the program. It's entirely online but the student experience is incredible compared to what you'll get from a stodgy university licensing third-party software for their distance-learning programs. The tuition is $24k, and while we're not accredited we offer a full tuition reimbursement if we're not able to get you into a software engineering job after you graduate. If you're curious, https://www.bloc.io/software-engineering-track describing the program in more detail.
