What can I bring into an interview with a company with an established marketing department to impress the hiring manager?

  • The jobs market is tough right now, so it doesn't hurt to put in extra effort in order to get a leg up on the competition here in the SF Bay Area. What are some things (besides the resume) to bring into a marketing department interview that would show that you're serious about the position? Specifically targeting Tech and Gaming industries that have an already established marketing department.

    I would put together a 30-60-90 day plan, or an all out marketing plan, to show that you've done your research on the company and can hit the ground running. Prove that you can provide valuable insights on the marketing strategy and you will be sure to stand out!

This is a great question. I don't know exactly what position you are applying for within the department, so it's difficult to be targeted and specific in my answer. In general, I'm hoping you are keeping a portfolio of your past work, stuff that you can share without violating any non-disclosure or non-compete agreements with prior employers. Based on the position, I would bring one or two samples that are respresentative of your creative nature, the quality of work, the attention to detail, and other aspects that are important to the hiring manager for the job in question - after all, you are the solution to his hiring problem, so any past project work that helps tell your story without inundating them with material will be helpful. You can judge when/if to use them in the interview. Don't leave anything behind, keep control of your material.
