What's the best system for collecting our team's product (development) ideas?
-
I'd like to create an open forum for the engineers, marketing, and sales teams in my company to collect product ideas or product development ideas that we can later test and discuss with marketing. What are some services/systems you've used? PBwiki? Text files on a server? I'd like for it to be easy for everyone to use (not everyone is tech-savvy) and useful for collecting ideas for the head of marketing and myself. Thanks!

Answer:
My favorite fall back has always been Excel, because I get to manage it. Seriously, though, whatever the platform, I like to label the ideas using an acronym MoSCoW - meaning Must have, Should have, Could have, and Won't have. The system I have used in the past as a community platform for gathering these items is FogBugz. If you already have a product in place, then FogBugz is an excellent way to track, document, assign, and report on issues. It also by default, then, becomes an excellent source for product feature ideas.

According to a study we carried by interviewing 127 of our clients "best" would ideally mean super simple to use. People and teams have huge motivation to be more organized and productive. We found that the#1 reason why these teams fail is because the tools they use are too complicated to adopt. "Employees lack confidence in their ability to make proper use of such tools". User-onboarding is tedious and inputting information is felt more as a pain rather than a benefit. Filling in boxes and forms doesn't feel natural or appealing. At https://www.twoodo.com/?utm_source=quora&utm_medium=answer&utm_campaign=twoodo we've created a team collaboration tool to easily create workflows right from within team conversations. You organize as you discuss. It includes team messaging, private messaging, task management, a shared calendar, levels of importance, a file manager, actionable tagging, email integration, robust search, peace of mind and so much more..â This 10 second animated gif explains it pretty well: All your communication and tasks are organized within your conversations. You can insert tasks, events, due dates directly into your conversations. As another side note here are some stats from our research that you might find interesting: Around $37 Billion are lost yearly due to employee misunderstandings and bad communication (Holmes Report) Companies and teams that attempt to solve this with social collaboration tools find that more than 50% of people do not use the tools (WSJ) The 4 biggest pains of remote team collaboration are poor task management, long email threads, difficulty in scheduling virtual meetings and bad communication tools (SoftwareAdvice) Here's a quick video of how we solve these issues: Intro to our calendar: And our Email integraiton so that non-users can still take part in the action:

We use Trello. It's easy to use, free and can accommodate as many users as you need. You can capture individual ideas in lists and have discussions on each of them.
