    Depends on how much you want to spend and how large the room is. They sell sound bars with subwoofers which would give you the bass for not a fortune. The best is a full system with receiver, 5 to 7 speakers and a subwoofer but that is very expensive and good for large rooms.

For a small room a soundbar with separate bass would be enough. For a large room a 5.1 or 7.1 receiver with a good set of speakers

This will depend on your own personal budget and the size of the room. If you are looking to hear a good surround sound, then a multi channel receiver would be the best and adding speakers to it. Look at an Onkyo HT-3500, it is a 5.1 receiver and a set of speakers. You can demo the unit at any Fry's Electronic store. The system goes for under $300. You can also upgrade and add other device to the system, which you can do on a home theater in a box or sound bar. Hope this will help you out.

What receiver do you have? Most of them will NOT let you use less than 5 speakers. (You did not know you needed a receiver for speakers - did you?) You probably want a soundbar with the ability to add a outboard subwoofer. The soundbar has an amp built in so you basically run an optical cable from your HDTV to the soundbar.
