Linux Desktop: System Admin forcing to remove Ubuntu and install Windows?
-
Hello everyone, My organization's system admin is asking me to remove Ubuntu from my official laptop and install windows so that they can enforce domain policies and manage the system, At my workplace i am managing a cluster of 40+ ubuntu/linux servers and all of the services i am working for are developed on linux and opensource platform. I find it very irritating when i have to manage those linux server from a windows system as terminal and other command set tool that is available in a linux desktop is far better than tools available on windows. one such example is putty. I would like to know what are the corporate IT policies for a non-windows systems and how developers and linux admins can get an exception for using Linux at workplace. I would like to hear some real life examples from linux desktop users from corporate sector. meanwhile our system admin also blocked my official e-mail account (basically my AD logon account) because of not following domain enforcement policy. Update: Linux systems i am managing are hosting services (most of are VoIP) which are developed in-house and dependent on many opensource tools and heavily rely on Unix/Linux commands and POSIX environment. Regards

Answer:
If the concern is security or just plain following the policy for no good reason, then maybe the company should set up a lab environment isolated from the corporate network and maybe with its own Internet connection.

If I were in your position I would tell the it Systems Administrator that he needs to learn how to manage work stations in a mixed environment.
