What's it like being taught Creationism in public schools?
-
A Slate article entitled "http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/science/2014/01/creationism_in_texas_public_schools_undermining_the_charter_movement.html" states that over seventeen thousand children in one brand of charter schools are being taught creationism over evolution. What are your experiences?

Answer:
My experience was of the completely and totally illegal variety. This was Alberta, in the early 90's at a very small rural school. One of my Junior High teachers was (as I later found out) was an incompetent nincompoop who had been 'invited to pursue other opportunities' by many other local schools and ended up teaching science at the tiny rural school I went to. We were in Grade 8, and weren't subject to mandatory testing that year. We also all shared a generally similar religious background. Mr Nincompoop would present the mandated curriculum by rote, and then would start talking during the discussion portion of the class. He'd go into depth about his own religious theories, and present the mandated curriculum as 'That's what 'they' say, but we all know what 'really' happened'. The scene that is the most pernicious to me is a memory I have of one of the final tests in the class. The last question was 'What is the alternative to evolution?' with the answer being 'Creationism'. I felt very proud and happy to be in-the-know and to get that question right. That's the serious beef I have with creationists who insist on teaching their ideas in public schools. They present a carefully constructed lie to kids who don't know any better and have no framework to evaluate their claims.

This is like being back to the dark Middle-Age. This is like saying that the secular justice system is being replaced by the inquisition where a suspect would be submitted to a trial by ordeal. I am convinced that the same bigot people who plead for having creationism replacing evolution would plead for such an "enhancement" of the justice system. This is extremely serious when youth is educated to believe dogmas against evidence over fact-based sciences.
