Which would be a better career Electrical or computer engineer?

I am a computer engineer in my late 20s. Can I reinvent my career and establish myself in pure sciences research?

• I was a geek in school and I studied Physics and Chemistry with great interest and curiosity. I was the topper throughout. After class 12, all of my friends opted for either engineering (especially computers) or medical degree. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do in life and hence I followed the herd mentality. I ended up doing a B.Tech in Computer Engg instead of B.Sc. (in Physics / Chemistry) as the latter had a lower reputation in the society. Note that I don't really hate my computer engineering research career. I would rate it as 7 on a scale of 10. Now my love for Physics and Chemistry has re-ignited and I feel I can make a greater impact on the society through research in these areas, than in computer engineering. I think this career option will get a rating of 9 or 10 from me. Can I reinvent my career this way, at this age ? How ? Is this a "grass is always greener on the other side" phenomenon? How can I be sure that this isn't the case ?

  If is the love that reignited, dont think about "grass is always greener".  Thats getting analytical about the heart desires. As they say "dont reason with the heart" .  So I would say "go for it" !!  . Quite a lot of times,  pure sciences can satisfy your intellectual quest, a lot more than application work. As for the pragmatic part, spend more time in the current industry , make sure you have a good cushion of money . And then you can in parallel , read up stuff you are interested, make an excellent sop and apply for a masters program in a good university ( if you think you cant cut it , apply for an undergrad !! it is never too late ..you would probably need more cushion with the undergrad part !! ) . You can also undergrad part time , like right now. There are always ways !! Just go and "consider this as the sign" :)
