I fall asleep very quickly while reading. What causes this? How can I avoid this?

If I pick a book for reading (specially novel) I fall asleep very quickly, it doesn't take me 5 minutes to fall asleep then. I can sleep at 12 o'clock in the afternoon if I start reading, I can't finish a novel no matter what. How can I handle this?

Answer:

I'm not sure of the quality of book you are looking for, but the more that a book "speaks to you", to your personal issues, your lifestyle, the more likely you will remain interested. I know many people who no longer read novels and love nonfiction only, "true" stories, such as biographies, memoirs, self-help books. There is more of a feeling of "this really happened" that maintains interest. For novels, I suggest Louis Lamour, James Patterson, Danielle Steel, as they get right into the story and move it along at a great pace.

May be before starting novel's try reading topics which you like. Start reading magzines with lots and lots of picture with nominal description. Develop habit before starting actual stuff.

What kind of books are you reading? Maybe you need to switch to more interesting books during bed time. Something along the lines of Papillon or other adventure stories.

When you wake up, flip back a few pages, there may be a word, term or concept your subtly struggling with that you need to understand.

Does the same thing happens to you while watching paranormal activity(horror movie). In short, you are just reading it not feeling(visualizing) it.

For me it took some time to get momentum while reading novels . Only few novels are there which keep you hooked since the first line or may be first page. So be somewhat patient or fast on reading first few pages . At the end when you are caught up in the story you will automatically backward to get somewhat deeper understanding. If it doesn't work simply change the book!

This is a good question. Even I used to struggle with sleep when I started reading. But now I can chew on books and can read 15 hours straight. Trick is you just a start. Once you finish a book or two within 2-3 days you will gain confidence and your mind will adjust. Also you can try the following :- Read in public. A library or a coffee shop tend to be more stimulating environments. Initially you can try reading in your peak hours, when your mind is most active. You can set goals for yourself. Read 20 pages and take a short break, then again read for 20 more minutes.

Hi friend! May be following tips help you 1. Don't read on your bed.. Or don't read lying on your bed... i.e don't give too much comfort to your body otherwise you will fall asleep. 2. don't just go through words while reading...i.e do not read without understanding...try to understand each word..keep a dictionary for difficult words...if u jst keep on skipping words then u will find it boring nd u will feel sleepy. 3. Read in a silent environment and with complete focus. 4. Mst imp..always visualize what u read..i.e try to make a story...this will make the book more interesting and u will be focused. 5. Don't read too much, fix a time of eg. Half an hour, even if u are focused and try to stop ur mind frm reading more and skip to continue reading fr tomorrow. this will create a suspense or curiosity about reading the book.

- Stay engaged when you read something. One way is to really increase your reading speed so distraction is minimal. There are ways to increase your reading speed dramatically. Do some searches. - Read actively. Take notes/highlight and come back to review it. - Find subjects that are more interesting to you. May its sports, world history, how to make something, or biography. Hone your ability to read for longer sessions and then pursue other subjects. - Read the plot outline so you can follow along even though you are not tracking each detail. Might be helpful if you are looking to get the gist of the book and not necessarily remember each detail. - Find time to read when you are really energetic, got up after a nice nap, or have come back from a workout. I think recognizing how to find the right time that aligns with your physiology could be useful.
