What were sports bars like before flat screen TVs and Satellite TV?

  • As I was sitting watching a soccer game in another country on a wall-sized projected TV screen, I realized what a wild era we live in. What were Sports Bars like before the proliferation of cheap flat screen TVs and Satellite TV and sports packages? Did people go to bars to watch/listen to the game?

    Wow you must be a real youngin.  They had several really big TVs and for a long time was the only place you could watch most of the games.  In many ways the proliferation of cable and satellite has hurt the sports bars.  I remember when every time a big fight (back when people still cared about boxing) or game was on everyone would head down to the bar (which would purchase the fight on pay per view) and everyone would get drunk and celebrate.  Those were good times.

I once saw the Mike Tyson Evander Holyfield fight on a projection screened tv in the 90s at a bar. Largely before the 90s there was no such thing as a "sports bar." It was just a bar with perhaps a TV over the bar. If the bar was a little bigger it might have a pool table, dart board, a pinball and video game. Before then the purpose of going to the bar was to smoke, drink beer, talk to your friends, maybe shoot some pool, and avoid the wife. If you wanted to watch the game, just go home.

Very much the same.  Television has changed over time as far as technology, but the concept overall is the same. Televisions in bars and clubs have been a fixture since I was young (1970s)
