Why do you think volunteering in the community is good?

Why is it looked upon favorably if someone volunteers for community service, but one that only targets his/her ethnic group?

  • Why is it always looked upon favorably if someone has a lot of community volunteer experience, even if the volunteer work only targets/benefits his or her ethnic group? We've all seen these types of people in college applications or post-grad resumes that seem impressive at first glance. An African American having X years of experience in an African Students Association, or an Asian assuming leadership roles in an Asian organization. What I have yet to see is an African American actively helping out the Latino group or a Latino volunteering for Asians in the community. Even within the Asian community, I have yet to see one ethnic group helping out a different ethnic group (e.g. Koreans helping out Thais). While I think it is great that people are volunteering at all, it does seem that the act of only helping people in your ethnic group isn't as noble as it seems. Perhaps it will even further American society's racial division. Has anyone questioned the same thing?

  • Answer:

We are still tribal, it's seems to be our nature. volunteering is still good, someone gets helped anyway.
