When children learn about directed numbers in school they mix up the rules which apply when adding directed numbers with the rules that apply when multiplying and dividing directed numbers.

Numbers are like soldiers. A Number either belongs to the PLUS army or the MINUS army. If numbers from the same army meet they simply join forces. If numbers from opposing armies meet a battle ensues. One PLUS will kill one MINUS and the army with the most number of soldiers will win the battle.
