How can Joomla! be used to blog?

By default, joomla has the blog component, in most cases that is all you will need. Try this default component first, and if don't fill all you need then go with http://getk2.org/

I agree with those who prefer Joomla's default feature set for this, if you are indeed committed for whatever reason to using Joomla.  It's plenty, assuming all the authors are in-house.

Joomla can easily be used as blog, there are lot of options, you can create a page, menu item type "Category Blog". If you really want an extension this guys do a great job: http://stackideas.com/easyblog .

Why does your choice falls on particularly Joomla? I would suggest to test WordPress via the automated tool of https://www.cms2cms.com/. It would cost you nothing to try, and be on quite an optimal price for a full migration. For blogging, I haven't yet tried anything better and more simple than WordPress.

All the answers here are good advice, except for Wordpress trolls who crash Joomla dialogs with suggestions to abandon Joomla in favor of Wordpress (BTW, I use both WPMU and Joomla for my clients and have no bias - each has their strong points, and WP might be a better blogging solution if that's all you do, but Joomla is stronger in most other areas for a business site). Yes, EasyBlog is a function-rich blogging engine, JoomBlog is also good, there is in fact a WP bridge available for Joomla for those who crave the WP feel, and you absolutely can use Joomla or K2 to blog. However, based on interactions with over 7o clients and listening carefully to their feedback and having used all these solutions, my solution of record is now using Google's Blogger (BlogSpot) and integrating it with Joomla using Jumi. Reasons for this - 1) Blogger is much easier to use than either WordPress or anything else available as Joomla extensions (most of my clients felt the additional learning curve and complexity of both K2 and EasyBlog weren't worth the payback), 2) you get substantially more credit on search engines by using Blogger, 3) all my clients already have Google accounts for Analytics, mail/voicemail, Google MyBusiness, etc., so it was an easy add-on. My second most common solution (almost as popular as the Blogger/Jumi solution), is that proposed by Warren Diggles.
