How can I start a graphic design portfolio?

How can I start with User Experience design?

  • I'm a graphic designer with more than 10 years working experience. I'm an internet worm but not a genius website designer (eg I can spend all day in the internet searching about several things, notice websites, learn about applications, design a webpage on paper or even illustrator/photoshop but when dreamweaver or flash time comes I'd rather do something else). I want to learn more about UX Design. How can I start? (books, online classes etc) How can I begin to work as a UX Designer? Where to search for a work if I won't have a UX designer portfolio?

Here are my two cents: http://oobly.com/2011/08/23/curate-filter-sketch-the-way-i-design-app-interfaces_409/ Slideshare: http://www.slideshare.net/BonGeek/curate-filter-sketch Just buzz me if you need more guidance, I am happy to help you. I came from Dev background, and I did transition by doing self-study and also got fortunate to have an awesome mentor. I will be posting my article soon regarding my switch and how I did it and how one can do it. But as you already in the graphic designing arena, Curate-Filter-Sketch will be a good starting point. UX is more than A/B testing. UX is about listen to users and design accordingly. It is not only about webdesign. UX involves other sectors such as (and not only) ubiquitous systems. Wikipedia suggests a good definition: User experience (UX or UE) is the way a person feels about using a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Product_(business), http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System or service. User experience highlights the experiential, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Affective, meaningful and valuable aspects of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human-computer_interaction and product ownership, but it also includes a person’s perceptions of the practical aspects such as utility, ease of use and efficiency of the system. User experience is subjective in nature, because it is about an individual’s feelings and thoughts about the system. User experience is dynamic, because it changes over time as the circumstances change. The appearance of interfaces is the last problem of a UX (while it could be the first for a Graphic Designer). UX is a matter of information organisation, accessibility, usability, enjoyability and so on. For a overview I suggest you to start form the HCI course by Alan Dix. It started two weeks ago and you are in time to subscribe and follow the lessons: http://hcicourse.com/

It's hard with all the noise of the Internet to really know what matters. Here is my list: 1. http://www.alistapart.com/articles/the-ux-of-learning/ (Probably the best blog post to date) 2. Do lots of A/B testings, all the time. (learn how to adapt, I wrote a blog post about it here: http://iwilldesignyou.com/blog/?p=11) 3. Just look at what others do and be inspired. I found http://duolingo.com to be particularly awesome!

The key thing is to understand the framework for UX design. It it made up of strategic phases as well as a wide variety of tactics that you can employ during those phases. I wrote a more in depth article over at Shopify:https://www.shopify.com/partners/blog/a-quick-guide-to-getting-started-with-user-experience-design (includes strategy, tactics, and resources for more study)Another thing that is important to note, is that User Experience is very much about learning how to learn. It’s about collecting data and knowing how to filter and make sense of that data and turn that into design.
