What is the best hotel in New York City?

I always stay at the Red Roof Inn, on 32nd, between 5th and Broadway. It is in Korea town so the area never goes to sleep, buzzing with all night restaurants and very attractive Korean women. Recommended restaurant on the street: Mandoo Bar. The Red Roof, which is run by the AppleCore hotel group, has an attentive and pleasant staff, clean rooms, is reasonably inexpensive, and has SUPER location! Herald Square and Macy's are close by, and you can see the ESB from most east-facing rooms.

I'd go for the Mercer Hotel in Soho

AirBnb I know that's probably not what you were looking for, but staying in an Airbnb is truly the best way to experience the City. You can pick whichever area you want to stay in based on what you want to do and find something in your price range. There are lots of people who rent out their whole apartment if you want some privacy. If not, renting a room or a couch is a great way to get to know the locals and get the inside scoop that you won't get from the people at the front desk at a hotel. If you think that Airbnb far inferior to staying in a hotel, think about what you'll actually be missing: tiny bottles of crappy shampoo, someone making your bed every morning, and a shitty continental breakfast.

New York has some amazing hotels. Some of the best hotels in my opinion are: -The Ritz, -The Plaza, -The Four Seasons, -The Carlyle, -The James -The Greenwich and -The Mandarin Oriental. (namely any hotel that has 'The' preceding it). There are other ones that have great common areas, ammenities or rooftops but these are some of my favorite all-around hotels in the city.

There are many people who rent small studios or rooms in their homes on this site: http://www.airbnb.com/ Ramada Inn in Jersey city as well as Super 8 motel in North Bergen are fairly priced, and commute into New York city is fast- less than 20 minutes on bus/train. The Sheraton in Weehawken, often has deals. It is a quick ferry ride to Manhattan from there. The only disadvantage of staying in New Jersey is that you cannot easily come back to your hotel. Manhattan does not have that many places where you can sit in a coffeeshop for free- Most coffeeshops have very few seats. I recommend the Starbucks in Empire State Building- It has a basement level where seats are usually available. If you are not going to shop in New York city - eliminating the need to go back to your hotel- I recommend staying in New Jersey- and spending the savings on fancier restaurants and Broadway shows.
