What are some good ideas to save a very old email address from spammers?

• Hello Friends, I have been using gmail for past 7 years. In these seven years, I have shared my email address with lots of website in past seven years. You know whenever you want something, you have do that registration thing and they ask you for your email. And from the moment, you register on the website you are bombarded with all sorts of promotional email, offer email etc. Apart from that, being in public domain for such a long time, it has become a primary destination for spammer as well which even gmail fails to detect. So overall, I am on the verge of loosing this email address of mine. Every day I receive around 100s of email in my inbox. I have to spawn all of these 100 email in order to ensure that I don't miss anything important. I have thought of changing my email address many a times, but it's not as easy as changing your phone number. You can not rely that everyone will update your email address in their contact book. And besides that, you must have published your email address at various places, for example in any news paper article, some research paper, some journal or even at some where other important place. You might loose something really important in this process of switching. So people... Any recommendation what should I do in my current situation ?
