How much time should it take to get an above average GRE score given that I have just started preparing?
-
I am a student belonging to a tier 2 institution in India. I have just started preparing for GRE. Given that I prepare more or less regularly from now on, can I target the mid May time this year to give the GRE exam so as to get a pretty good score, may be around the 320-330 range?

Answer:
I prepared for 3 months and scored 326 if that is all that you care for...

Depends on your learning pace. To keep check on your preparation, you can take mock tests at regular intervals, in this way you can see the progress of your preparation.

It took me 3 months, however I wished I had more time! GRE requires practice, ensure that time for learning new words along with math concepts is set aside.

A2A.It took me around 1.5 months while working full-time, so I presume it can be done quicker if you have more free time on your hands during the day.1 month, I think could be the bare minimum you can push yourself to cover most of the relevant topics in.

That depends on your current abilities and your target scores. I suggest that you take an official practice test (https://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/prepare/powerprep2) to see where you stand. Cheers, Brent

The GRE general test consists of three sections: Verbal, Quants and Analytical Writing. The Verbal section tests your ability to use words in correct structure and context. It also tests your ability to comprehend the holistic picture given in the passages and your skill in accepting or negating an argument. You need to know different types of words, clauses, tenses and structures to crack this section with ease. Quantitative section focuses on basic math. It is going to be high school mathematics which you already know. The biggest catch of this section is how well you utilize the given time to complete the section. Trust me, it does not involve anything to memorize or does not offer any complex elements of mathematics. Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) is an essay writing section comprising two essays: Issue and Argument essays. The purpose of this section is to gauge your ability in developing reasons and highlighting profound examples to validate those reasons. Overall, the exam tests your ability to analyze and independently develop reasons. Since its a 4.5 hour exercise, for some some people it is an endurance test. Having said that, a solid preparation of 8-10 weeks would be sufficient to hit the sweet spot in the exam. All the best!!

How long you should study for the GRE is an important consideration. However, there is no one pat answer. You could be a quantum physicist with a penchant for vocab, one who enjoys spending his or her time solving really convoluted math problems (while penning purple poetry). Clearly this person could cram for the GRE by whipping through the 2ndEdition Official Guide. On the other hand, there are many who take the GRE for whom English is not a first language. There are others for whom the only thing that comes to mind when they hear Ï is apple (usually the last time they opened up a textbook on math, bell-bottom jeans were in). Clearly, cramming is not a viable option for them.
