What is copper?

State in terms of electrons, what happens when a copper ion becomes a copper atom?

  • I know that Copper is normally Cu2+ (I think) but what happens when a copper ion becomes a copper atom? Thanks

  • Answer:

copper has atomic number Z =29. hence, in a neutral atom , Cu has 29 electrons by default. but, if it becomes a ion, then it looses 2 electrons and gets a charge of 2+ because now it has 27 electrons and 29 protons. hence, it has 2 protons more, i.e 2+
