What Do I Have To Do To Better My Chances For An Internship?

Does pursuing a research internship at a university abroad reduce one's chances of securing a non-core (finance, consult, analytics) job?

  • BTech students often have this dilemma since most of them do only one internship. How about a research internship at a top-ranked place? How about a core industrial internship at an MNC?

  • Answer:

A research internship most definitely won't be of any use for a non-core job. You're far better off doing an internship at a non core company even if the work you are doing isn't the most rewarding per se. You'll be exposed to that side of the world and have major learning opportunities. I'd add though that you could use that time to focus on building a well rounded personality as well, something that a non-core firm would pay attention to. That would imply social work / delving deeper into one of your hobbies / pursuing some extra curricular course / learning a language etc.
