If I am considering an MS in Electrical\Electronic\Communication Engineering, should I consider the general subject rankings of universities or the research rankings as indicated by ARWU, NRC?

Which is better for an MS - UPenn or NorthWestern? I was surprised to not find NU in the QS Subject Rankings-http://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/university-subject-rankings/2012/engineering-electrical-and-electronic and http://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/university-subject-rankings/2012/computer-science-and-information-systems

Answer:
The ranking of the school only matters if you plan on getting a Ph.D and pursuing an academic career (e.g. plan on being a professor). When choosing a graduate school, selecting one over another with a similar program doesn't do a whole lot for you, especially if you're only considering a Master's degree. Think further into the future. What are the chances that what you are taught in one class at one university will be more helpful 10 years down the road than what is taught in a similar class at a different university? Furthermore, if you do pursue a thesis-based Master's degree, what precisely is the chance that your thesis will be directly relevant to your next job when the thesis you would do at another university wouldn't be? In addition to a "better" education offered by a "better" university (I use the term "better" despite the fact that it doesn't make a difference that can't easily be accounted for by some other means), often the bigger universities claim they can help you get a better job by connecting you through a bigger network. This is only true by the sheer numbers, not through the quality of the network or the probability that any individual contact or group of contacts will be helpful. More important than the rankings should be more personal questions. Does the university have a professor whose research I am interested in? Would I get along with that professor? Does the university have the classes I am looking for? And perhaps at your stage in life, the most important question should be How will I pay for furthering my education?
