What is the difference between M.Tech and M.S?

What's the difference between a Masters admit and a PhD (MS+PhD) admit?

  • Hi All, I was just wondering as to what is the difference between a Masters admit and a PhD (MS+PhD) admit with respect to financial support that the Universities will provide. I specifically want to address the Engineering programs in USA. Does a PhD (MS+PhD) guarantee funding for the Masters program as well? Is it easier to get admitted into a MS program as compared to a PhD (MS+PhD) program and what are some prerogatives of students offered a MS+PhD admit over students offered MS admit, if there are any. Thanks.

  • Answer:

Typically, graduate programs in the US provide financial support for PhD but not masters students. In terms of financial support, I would expect that MS + PhD admits would be treated like PhD students, so they would likely be supported for the MS portion of their degree. Note that it's common in the US to skip the MS degree and go straight to a PhD, with the MS degree available only if you fail to finish the PhD.

In my engineering program, the funding guaranteed for the PhD includes the MS, if one is required.  Unlike 's experience, my department requires a MS.  It is often easier to be accepted into a MS program, but don't expect funding for many of those people.  A MS+PhD student, besides being offered funding, may be given priority for scheduling classes to prepare for the qualifying exam.
