Why do I always lose things and what can I do to keep from losing things?
-
For some reason I always lose things or accidentally leave them somewhere. Almost every day when I leave the house I have to turn around at least once because I left my keys or cell phone or something, and the same goes for when I go to work or other people's houses. That isn't much of a problem because the things I forget always come back, but I also lose things when I'm outside pretty frequently as well. I would say that objectively speaking I'm a pretty intelligent person, and I don't have a particularly bad memory, so I feel like I can solve my problem by organising things differently or making some kind of lifestyle change. Is there anything I can do as part of my daily routine to keep from losing things so frequently?

Answer:
Start creating a routine, at least for keys, wallet and phone. Personally I've had them in the same place for over 10 years (I'm 25, so that's pretty much since I've had them) so every time I leave the house it's one of the steps I have to complete before leaving. In 10 years I've forgotten my keys like 2-3 times max. I've had phones on off and they are in my bedroom so I've left that one a few more times, but it doesn't happen very often. You can get a bowl for your stuff and leave it by the door. Then just leave your stuff there every time you come in, and pick it up when you leave. Also, regarding leaving stuff in other places I have to cheat there, I also leave every thing, every where, so I really avoid taking stuff I don't usually take, and the other stuff just doesn't leave my pockets lol...

There are a number of things you can do.One of the most powerful is, when you put something down or put it away, ask yourself this question: Where will I look for this when I need it? This simple question is deceptively powerful - what this means is you are attacking the "lost things" problem from the other side by putting items where you will search for them first. For leaving in the morning, I'd recommend an item to carry things in - such as briefcase, backpack, or purse - and putting your critical items in it. Then when you leave, everything will be there. Also put things in the night before if that is relevant. Also when visiting other's homes, I'd keep everything in your backpack or purse - then when you leave, just pick up your purse (or backpack) and its all there.

Everyone loses things once in a while. However, if itâs constant, there is a cause. One of the most common is ADD/ADHD. Others include short-term memory issues and eyesight problems. I am familiar with the ADD version.Instead of mindfully setting down your keys when you walk in, you just walk in. Your hand lays your keys down while your mind is doing other things. You donât have a chance to plan ahead or place things sensibly. Similarly, when you leave, you donât think about all the things you need to pick up.My kids remember things because theyâre on ADD meds. I donât. I remember things because I use a myriad of little tricks. I also forget stuff sometimes, but the tricks help.Sometimes, I make lists. When I bring extra stuff to work, I literally make a list like so: keys coffee cup laptop mouse purse My list includes the obvious stuff that Iâm going to forget. Iâve also been known, upon finishing my coffee, to drop the coffee cup into my purse so I wonât forget it. Another little trick is to create a habit to always, always check for my phone. Getting groceries. Phone? Going to work. Phone? Walking across the room. Phone? There are gadgets for sale that track keys, phones, etc. I have seriously considered getting one, but the good ones are kind of pricey. They will even ring your bluetooth-enabled phone if you walk away without your tracked item. The more solutions you have, the better you will do.

If we don't pay attention to what we're doing, we forget where we put things. I think we've all done that :) Try to stay more present when you set down the keys, etc. or have one spot for things and know where they go so you don't have to think about it :)
