What is your opinion on being a chef?

Hosted Chef or Private Chef?

  • Want to hear your opinion and experience between hosted and private chef.

  • Answer:

Private chef is a pain to install. You have to set up CouchDB, RabbitMQ, Java & Solr, ruby & a bunch of dependencies & the chef server code, and some web server configs (nginx / apache / etc.), then go through the chef server configuration. It's slightly easier if you're on Ubuntu (like most chef stuff), but still, you'll need to dedicate an entire machine to running all those components and quite a bit of time to set all of them up. If you have the money, go for hosted chef. Especially if you have a smaller number of servers. There is a third option: 100% chef-solo with no chef server. If I were using chef, and starting from scratch, this would be my first choice. You have to slightly change the way you use chef, but I think it makes a lot more sense, is a lot simpler to understand, and cuts down the number of moving parts by a lot.
