Why do students accept branch of study in which they are not interested? And get into IIT just for namesake.
-
I meet students at IIT who say I am interested in CS(for e.g.), but I didn't get it( due to JEE rank). Why do such students accept the admission and ruin their interests? They say they didn't even get their branch through Branch Change. Then, they start learning the subjects related to their interested branch by taking electives or reading stuff, and leaving aside the brach they are enrolled in. What sense does it make? Why don't they just pursue their interested branch in other colleges where they don't have to do such trade offs?

Answer:
To be precise, they do it for that "IIT tag".

The truth is that very few people actually know what the curriculum for a particular branch actually entails before coming to IIT. This is especially true of departments like CS and Biotech/Bioengineering, where the course content has little to do with the materials studied for JEE prep. In addition, a lot of branches that seem familiar to people, for instance, Physics and Electrical Engineering, due to limited exposure to them in +2, actually turn out to be very different from what they had imagined. The worst part of this is that, at the end of the 4/5 years many people learn nothing about themselves beyond that they hate their department.

The case mentioned above is with most of the IITians. All of us when start preparing for JEE we study to derive the best knowledge out of our subjects, we dream of the best ranks and courses. Now, majority of the people wish for CS simply because they know only best rankers get CS (indirectly they wish for good ranks) and also that the CS jobs are highly paid. Come on, I may agree that one can develop an interest in Mechanical, Physics or Chemistry based on our XII exams but not in CS. Coding is not at all a part of JEE curriculum. People get to know their interest only after first year. For the remaining few, having interest in one particular course does not mean hatred for the others. Still Sir you have to agree that nailing one of the toughest paper is a moment of proud. So rejecting the IITian Tag is very difficult, atleast outside the campus. Now pursuing your interest is never bad. So I find no harm in Minors. And as general knowledge I would like to mention that in general people who take electives have a decent CGPA.
