What is the title of the 70's or 80's TV series about a lawyer who studied law while in prison for car theft?

• I have vague memories about a TV series from the late 70's or early 80's about a lawyer, who was set to prison for grand theft auto. While inside, he studied law at the library, and upon release he got a law degree and passed the bar.  The plots were always related to his unique entry to the legal field, and the barriers he faced as one of the former bad guys defending bad guys. The episode I am trying to find has to do where the lawyer is framed as the ringleader for a car theft gang when two recently arrested car thieves trade testimony against him in return for a lighter sentence. They say the lawyer was the ringleader, and that he taught them how to steal the cars. The eventual defense that works is that in a parking lot demonstration the lawyer demonstrates that he can break into and start cars using his own techniques and tools faster than the two car thieves, and it would make no sense for him if he was the ringleader not to teach those methods instead of the ones the two car thieves used.
