Are technical professionals smarter than other professionals in other fields?

Why do you think IT professionals (initially, at least) are paid much more than engineers of other fields such as mechanical, civil, electrical?

  • I've graduated from a top NIT in India, and although being able to land myself the best there is for mech freshers in India (not a subjective judgement, the general consensus is that this company IS what most Mechanical freshers are looking for). I earn peanuts compared to my IT counterparts. I love my job, I really do. The only problem is I bust my ass as much (or more) compared to my peers and my wallet remains paper thin. How would you explain this?

  • Answer:

It is all supply and demand. The demand for IT professionals has been growing exponentially while the supply is fairly linear. Pick any given engineering company and look at the open job positions, chances are there are a lot more IT jobs than other fields.

It sound like IT is in high demand where you are. This is not true everywhere around the globe.
