How many days in a school year?

How many school days are there during a school year im different countries?

  • In Australia for instance students spend 200 days a year at school. Is that fairly average or are we higher or lower than normal. Does anyone think the school year should be altered in their country - and if so: why? Love to hear your thoughts.

  • Answer:

The UK law is 190 days minimum per annum. I don't know whether another ten days would make much difference. They do get a hell of a lot of homework here though, and from quite a young age.

I think the 200 days in Australia is about right for a child in grade 4. However, I think it's too much for a younger child, and not enough for a student graduating high school. Ideally I think grade 1 students should only spend maybe 180 days (36 weeks) at school. It should then increase one week each year until grade 12, where they spend 240 days at school (48 weeks, the same number of days a full-time worker spends at work). The reason I think this is that I think there are probably better things a 6-year-old child should be doing with their time than sitting in a class room more days than not. I also don't agree that they should attend school for as many days (and in some states more) than a 17 year old—17 year olds should be getting prepared for the real world, and in the real world they don't get 12 weeks of holidays a year.

Most school districts in the U.S. adhere to a 180-day calendar.

In Panama we have 12 weeks of summer vacation and 2 weeks in the middle of the year. So 52-14=38 weeks , however on average due to holidays/ conflicts we attend 4 days of school a week. So something close to 152(this varies with circumstances) In Raleigh, where I live right now it's 180 days.
