How hard is it for a mid-career professional to become a U.S. Foreign Service Officer?
-
-
Answer:
No harder than for anyone else. You need to pass the Foreign Service Officer Test (FSOT), pass medical and security clearances, and you're in. http://careers.state.gov/officer/selection-process Your experience will probably help you in certain parts of the testing, in fact, as you'll have more than 'book learning' in your quiver. I'd estimate that at least 50% of FSOs have come in after five or more years of experience in other professions/careers. Likely half of those come in after 20 or more years in other jobs.
