How does selling on eBay work?

How can I include selling on eBay under the "work experience" section of a resume?

  • Actually  I haven't had a traditional job for several years and the only "job" if  I could call it that during this time has been selling various  merchandise on eBay. I would like to list this under the "work  experience" category of a resume but I don't know how to do it in order  for it to look credible. First of all I would like to know - does  selling on ebay count as work? Whether it does or doesn't, I would  really appreciate some tips on how to write it in my resume. Is there a  way to phrase it so that prospective employers will see this as a real  job?

    I agree with Lucas, describe yourself as a small business owner and don't underestimate all that you learned. That's great experience. I've been fortunate to meet many eBay sellers, and they are often really impressive folks who have built businesses from nothing and pulled themselves and their families out of really tough financial situations. If you are applying for a job at eBay, PayPal, Amazon, or another ecommerce business, it's a great thing to have on your resume! Good luck!

I can't agree more with M@tt and Isaiah - if you were able to make a serviceable living online for "several years", then that makes you a small business person by any definition. The fact that you used eBay as a channel to find customers, sell and service them simply makes you wise :) Go ahead and describe what you actually did - what you call the business is up to you, although perhaps your eBay Seller ID would be a good place to start (depending how professional it sounds).

Instead of just saying that you've "sold items on ebay for several years", you can say that you have successfully founded and maintained an e-commerce shop online.  If you have niched items, feel free to include that, and if you took the time to market or bring in customer to your store, list that experience as well. Often as an ebay seller, you happen to be the chef, the cook, and the dishwasher. Why not put in all these steps into your resume?: Packaging and Shipping, Customer Relations, Item acquisition, Competitive Pricing Analysis, and so forth? Good Luck :)
