What is the difference between M.Tech and M.S?

What are the differences between an MS and an M.Tech?

  • I would like to know the differences between the M.Tech and MS programmes offered by Indian universities like IIT Madras and IISC. Is an MS inferior to an M.Tech in terms of reputation? If this is so, should one care about it?

  • Answer:

Disclaimer: This answer is applicable to centrally funded universities in India only.tl; dr MTech/ME is a course program whereas MS is a research program.Theoretical differences: MTech/ME is a strictly 2 year course, where as MS may go beyond 2 years. MTech/ME has more coursework than project work, in MS coursework is minimal and large chunk of credits allotted to thesis. For example, in IISc, MTech/ME students take 12-16 courses whereas MS students take 3/4 courses. MTech/ME admissions usually depend only on GATE scores, MS admissions usually consist of entrance examination score plus interviews. MTech/ME students get the degree by finishing the required courses and working in a project upto standard. MS students have to do research on a topic agreed upon by their advisors which will be scrutinized from a research point of view to award the degree. Underlying differences:MTech/ME is a course to train students in a particular stream within an engineering discipline, say machine design in mechanical engineering or VLSI in electronics engineering. It trains the student for working in an industry as well as pursue some amount of research activities. MS is for training to student to take up a research career whether in industry or academia. Many MS students go for a PhD to pursue further research. Therefore it is the students choice and interest that will decide which course to pursue. Companies in campus placement usually prefers MTech/ME students, though it is not a norm. Many companies who take up students for R&D work doesn't differentiate between MTech/ME and MS students.

Generally M.Tech has more of an official process of admission. You score something in GATE and then, apply for some colleges and colleges call you for interviews. If you satusfy them, you get an admit. Or you can get a direct admit based on your rank from some college. In case of M.S, generally you apply to some prof.s to work with them. One of those prof.s may like you according to your profile and earlier research work. Generally, professors are biased about GATE. So, they ask you for a GATE score or the university may have some criterion for GATE score. But this GATE score doesn't have any bar!! A satisfiable GATE score is enough. But you should have convinced some professor that they are willing to take you. Then you enter the college and mostly work on research problem and you finish your work and research and get your degree. In the meantime, you may take some courses. There may be some mandatory courses also. Generally, in reputation, M.Tech is highly reputed. M.S by Research doesn't have that high reputation. But it's your choice if you want reputation or you want satisfaction from work!! But having said that, I have seen people who are working in Top PhD programs in Europe and US after having their M.S from IITs. So, in case of PhD programs, research is the main criterion, not reputation. But in case of jobs, I am afraid, M.Tech degree has higher value, I suppose.

both are same in India there are some universities offering M.S. M.Tech carries two ways of lectures research based and class room based depending upon the university. but where as M.S is completely research based.

Depends heavily on the university that designs the course structure and syllabus -- some do a good job of differentiating these courses, others merely use a degree title because that's currently more popular. The M.S. degree has existed for a longer time.  The original intent in defining an M.Tech. course would've been to differentiate it from the M.S., by making it more technology/engineering oriented. The M.S. has more of a focus on science, naturally.  It's intended to provide a grounding in the domain of that particular science, and in research methodology, thus enabling the student to pursue a research and/or academic career.  It often requires a thesis, in which some original research work is presented and defended before a committee. In contrast, the M.Tech. is designed more to prepare the student for an engineering career.  The focus is on experimenting with and understanding the building blocks in a technology domain, thus enabling the student to create solutions to real-world problems.

The course work is less and research work is more in MS as compared to M.Tech. Duration of course is fixed in M.Tech whereas for MS, it may take 1.5 yrs to 3 Yrs. It is mostly depends upon you, your research interest and your supervisor. It is kind of Mini PhD, If you are having more interest in research work then you must go for MS. BTW as per job prospect companies gives same opportunities to MS and M.Tech candidates. FYI, IIT Madras and IIT Delhi also offers MS(By research). They took admission based on GATE score twice(June and December) in a year.

With the growing opportunities in the sectors of http://www.techsparks.co.in/ and M.S, the demands of both the courses have grown rapidly. With the growing number of aspirants for the master’s level courses, the confusion about the differences between M.Tech and M.S courses have also taken hype. There are many colleges that offer M.Tech and M.S course and there are many candidates pursuing the courses. Still a huge majority of people are confused about the differences between the two courses. The basic difference between the two courses is the study orientation and pattern. The M.Tech course is a more detailed course with a lot of study in it. Under the M.Tech degree, one has to attend regular classes in order to gain knowledge about the subject. The subject under M.Tech is studied in detail in classes. This is probably because a lot of things in theoretical aspect are to be studied for which classroom course is essential. The project under this course is completed simultaneously along with the classes. On the other hand the M.S course requires least attendance of the classes. The course basically deals with the practical knowledge and self study about the subject and the project. The students interact with the professors and attend those classes which are essential. They devote more time to their project under the degree of M.S.Another important difference between the two courses is the course duration. M.Tech degree generally ends in a time span of 2 years. The projects and the study both have to be completed in that span of time, whereas the scenario is different in case of M.S. In the M.S degree courses, one can stretch up the course to 3 to 4 years till one doesn’t complete his or her project. Thus the course doesn’t finish till the students finishes his or her project along with complete knowledge in that subject.

Both courses are Masters course in Engineering in IITs (Except BS-MS which relates to Basic Science ). Following are some similarities and difference in MS and MTech courses :Similarities: Both are Masters Program in Engineering. Admission in both are through GATE exam but in some department for MS you have to go through one more level of written/Interview or Both. Placements are almost same in Both program ( As Per IIT M http://placement.iitm.ac.in/ ) Differences: MS program is more research oriented despite the fact that you have to fulfill min. courses requirement and MTech is more course oriented. MTech admission is direct entry, based on your GATE rank. Usually higher rank get admission in this program. Duration of MTech program is fixed i.e. 2 year but in case of MS program it varies from 1.5 to 3 year usually. https://www.iitm.ac.in/academic-programmes Both program are good but if someone has a plan for PhD than MS program has slit edge over MTech due to there structure which is research oriented. The only thing lags in case of MS program is awareness except this both are almost same.Thanks...PS: Initially answered

MS is research oriented program: Pros: 1. choice of courses to take. No fixed/compulsory  coursework to do. 2.Less credits to earn. 3.Inclined towards research work heavily. 4. Advantage for PhD abroad. Cons: 1. Less subject oriented knowledge. 2.Less job opportunities. 3.Less versatile knowledge compared to M.Tech. (in same institute)

No, MS is not inferior to M.Tech. Generally, MS has a research thesis along with course work if it is a two year program. M.Tech is more inclined to industry oriented studies. It has a project in last semester instead of research thesis.
