How do you see a tool tip on iPad?

  • When I am on my laptop, I hover my mouse on someone's name in Quora and I get a small tool tip showing his name. Similarly, in Linkedin, I can see his profile details. How is it possible to see such tool tips in iPad? How do I just hover on top of a link/name and not click it? It doesn't work if I just touch the link!

  • Answer:

This is a good question. As you know, the common tool tip text will show when you move your mouse pointer on a hyperlink text. But unfortunately, the system like iOS that based on Touch Technology doesn't have a "mouse pointer".So, the html element for tool tip text can not be function properly on these devices with no "mouse pointer". Here is a good article by Trent Walton describes these funny question, please check it out. http://trentwalton.com/2010/07/05/non-hover/

I was wondering the same thing and foundĀ  "Tipped" (http://projects.nickstakenburg.com/tipped). It uses jquery and it looks quite nice, you can't hover (unless you are a Jedi) but clicking on the item will display the desired tooltip. You have to pay a small license for non-commercial use and a higher license for commercial use. I haven't tried because my is a small side-project.

No hover for iPad. Use a context menu instead.
