What could I do to make my blog more interesting?

What are some ways to make dog walking interesting enough to blog/write about?

  • I have a dog walking business and I thought it would be good marketing to write about it but I am having difficulty finding ideas good enough to keep people interested.  Any ideas on a way to make it fun and interesting ?

  • Answer:

How about getting a fisheye lense for your camera and taking really cute photos to share? Or how about making it like a diary from the dog's perspective. Describing the human world through the lense of doggy senses?

I would love to help you with this question. It’s actually part of my job description to come up with topics for other people. I wouldn’t focus on just writing about dog walking itself. Talk to topics that would interest people who need their dogs walked…Dogs! Try to have a variety of posts. You should have posts that are:   1)     Funny. Talk about something funny you heard or learned about dogs. Maybe a friend had a dog do something funny lately. You could also share funny videos you found online.   2)     Informative.  Tell people something they didn’t know about dogs. Start with information about why it is important to walk your dog and move on to other topics about dogs health, care, and information.   3)     Inspiring. Share stories of dogs that have done amazing things. Know any dogs that have saved lives? Share their story. People love to be inspired especially when it comes to our four-legged friends.   Hope this helps!

I would suggest that you could develop a fictional story line, especially a comedy. By having a central character and a basic routine, you can introduce all sorts of characters and situations. By introducing specific characteristics and personalities for the dogs, you can expand the potential for conflict.  Recurring characters, even ancillary ones, can also provide a form of continuity which will help develop a regular readership. You may also be able to find someone willing to do some original artwork for you.

You can always just write about each individual experience. Learn some story-telling techniques and you will really grab the attention of your audience.

Dog walking can be a very interesting topic to blog and write about if you do it the right way.  There are many pet lovers out there who would enjoy following such a blog.  One idea is to write a biography for every dog with their birthday and favorite activity.  For more ideas, check out the blog at http://Prosemedia.com.

To echo what a few others have already stated, look at your audience and topics that they would find interesting. For example, you audience is presumably all dog owners so posts like the "Top 10 Dog names", "What type of collar is the best" and "Why Do Dogs __________?" would all be great post ideas that would be relevant to your audience but have nothing to do with dog walking. When you meet or interact with your clients, are there common questions that come up? Answering common questions could be a great blog post that would help strengthen your role as a knowledgeable person and give your business extra credibility.  Additionally, you can look at other dog blogs and see which posts get the most interaction.

Read Alexandra Horowitz' book, "On Looking."  Eleven walks with expert eyes.  (One set of eyes belongs to her dog.)  You might find new things to notice.  She got a book contract out of the exercise.

Give advice about dog care; write about some of your experiences on dog walks; do profiles of some of your dogs, neighbor's dogs or client's dogs; picture and write about featured pets at local shelters; clients will like that. Check out issues of popular dog magazines for ideas on things to write about.

People who have dogs (self included) like watching and reading interesting stories about dogs. Put up videos and stories about amazing dogs from around the world and then mix in heart warming stories about you and your dogs that you have and that you walk. The viral videos will make your site interesting, and the stories about you and your dogs will make dog owners trust you to love and care for their dogs on their walks. Dogtube,us is a great source for viral videos and stories that range from cute and heart warming to sad and inspirational.

I would focus on science and research, and the numerous health benefits. There is plenty of research that shows that dogs, and pets in general benefit their owner. I fairly certain you can find research that shows that walking your dog once a day isn't only healthy and helpful for them, but can reduce your stress level and provide other health benefits. You may also want to focus on the benefits of owning a dog. It has been a while, but I've seen research that shows that owning a dog can increase your life expectancy.
