I lived in Italy for almost 14 years and traveled most weekends and holidays. The trains are a great way to get around. There are not as many night trains now, but there are still some and those can be a good way to go. You travel at times when you'd normally be asleep and don't have to pay for a hotel/hostel for that night. You can find train schedules and prices here: http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=ad1ce14114bc9110VgnVCM10000080a3e90aRCRD . It's hard to go wrong no matter where you choose to go. Certainly, you should see the major tourist destinations like Rome, Florence and Venice, but you can have a lot of fun visiting smaller places. Tivoli in the hills outside Rome is well worth visiting especially Villa d'Este and Villa Adriano. The old hill town of Bergamo is also interesting. Look for local festivals. One of my favorite events will be running in September this year. The small town of Marostica holds their living chess spectacle on even numbered years. http://www.marosticascacchi.it/en/a_ENG_1_1.html . This is a spectacular event recreating events dating back to 1454. Take the train to Pisa and the bus from there to Marostica. There's also the Historical Regatta in Venice on the 1st Sunday of September. San Miniato has a very good truffle festival running over three weekends in November. It's a small old hill town between Florence and Pisa. Perugia hosts the Eurochocolate Festival from the 17th to the 26th of October. It's held in the old town on the hilltop including in 14th century buildings which are now underground. There are lots of other festivals while you're there. Visit Trento and Bolzano for the Christmas markets at the end of November/December. You can find various local festivals celebrating local food specialties on sites like: http://www.sagreinitalia.it/ If you're in the Verona area. visit Lake Garda my favorite towns on the lake are Malcesine in the north and Sirmione on the south of the lake. There are a huge number of scenic old hill towns in Tuscany and Umbria like Montalcino, Montepulciano and Todi. Visit Polignano al Mare on the coast south of Bari and Alberobello If you're on the south coast of France, visit Eze and be sure to see the old town on the top of the hill. There's a bus from the road above the train station. For Paris, you can take the night train from Venice or Milan. If you go to Amsterdam, you can find budget flights at http://www.skyscanner.net/

I'm an American living here 17 years now........and train travel in Italy is pretty easy. There are also ferries that take you to Sardinia, Capri, Sicily and other Islands. The train along the Liguria coast cannot be beat, and will take you straight into France, after Ventimilgia.....the border town. Menton, Monte Carlo and Nice, are right over the border. There are all sorts of cheap flights for traveling within Europe......Paris, Ireland Amsterdam....and wherever. July and August are the high seasons.......but Sept. and Oct. can be very cheap. The holidays, ---airfare starts going back up again. Hostels, in my experience, can range from pretty decent to downright seedy with shady characters. Alot of back packers who stupiidly believed those books "Europe on $10 a day" are sometimes starving, and finance the rest of their travels by petty theft. Keep a sharp on your possessions if you're sharing sleeping quarters with strangers. As for Hidden gems...........different strokes for different folks. But I am reminded of the time I took my Brother to Venice, and he wanted to see the REAL Venice..........not the "touristy crap"....so we spent the entire day walking around dirty, grimy back alley's and eating in dicey restaurants. Sometimes the GEMS are in plain view for a REASON........and those ***are**** the things wortth seeing.

Genn, a lot of people head for the big cities, really touristy, when I was on assignment, I went to smaller villages in places around Udini, Friuli up north, and had local cuisine, home cooked meals. My highlight was down south, Positano and the Amalfi Coast areas, Sorento, Naples. Then I struck it big time, in the Calabrian region, From Catanzaro all the way down to Reggio. Stopping at places, hope I spell this right, Guardavalle, really old mountain top village, Cosenza, Martoni, and Reggio itself before going across to Messina. Talmina was nice, but I found a place called Giearre Riposto, this was awesome, then head up towards the volcano, where the eruption buried some farm houses and places, the people are very welcoming and warm. What I enjoyed in Riposto, was the food, it has history. Sure people talk about Venice, Milano, Florence and alike, but where the real heat is, the small towns and villages, and the people. Again, you head over to France, highly recommend the small towns.

There are a lot of hidden gems that should actually be a must see but all the tourists go to the big cities. As you are staying some months you have time to discover them! It's hard to tell you what's the best because there are places for all the tastes! I pass you a website that may help http://www.gadders.eu It's a travel platform for who wants to discover Italy, so it's your case! You can sign up for free and you will find all the places worth to see in Italy! You will hardly go to all of them, but you can choose the ones you like the most because they are divided in categories like city, beach, etc. and for each place there are some travel tips from people who have been there! I think it's better to base your choice on the opinion of many than just my personal one!
