Look for a mute or attenuate button that might have been pushed and "jammed" in place. I cannot think of too many things that would cause the speakers to stop working because the front of the stereo was banged on. That slight static is common when a device is muted and the volume is cranked way up. Try it on your home system. You will hear the same thing. Warning: before you start pressing buttons, make sure the volume is turned back down or you might blow your ears out.
