What Is Profile Engine?

When is Facebook gonna take legal action against Profile Engine?

  • Profile Engine used my info and friends' info from Facebook to create a searchable profile of me. All my friends, interests, and locations are visible.

  • Answer:

"It is Facebook who have made it difficult to update or delete Profile Engine profiles by blocking you from using a Facebook login on the site over the last few months, despite already providing this function for Profile Engine users over the previous four years." In spite of all excuses or claims, I am the end user and it's my data. I never dealt with profile engine so to me they are illegally using my data to enrich their site.

Actually you got it completely backwards! Facebook made your information public and have granted the Profile Engine written permission to index it since 2008. There is controversy around whether Facebook actually obtained permission to make people's data public and give it to search engines, but Profile Engine has done nothing wrong - they only index data which Facebook has already made public and granted them permission to index. Facebook are now being sued by the developers of The Profile Engine because they invested a huge amount of time and money over four years in building a powerful search engine for Facebook and now Facebook have tried to back out of the agreement without compensating Profile Engine in any way and even tried to deny giving permission for the site to index the public data, despite there being a contract in place. It is Facebook who have made it difficult to update or delete Profile Engine profiles by blocking you from using a Facebook login on the site over the last few months, despite already providing this function for Profile Engine users over the previous four years. It seems likely that their change of attitude is because Profile Engine has become much more popular recently and they now see Profile Engine as a serious threat to their monopoly on social data, so by making it difficult to log in and update your profile they probably hope the data on Profile Engine will get out of date.
