Where is Lillie France located?

Is France geographically the best possibly located country in the world?

  • Whenever I look at a world map, I can't help but notice France. It lies at Europe but not too central to be involved in each and every conflict, however not too far to be away from important things. To the West of France lies Bay of Biscany, to the East, the Mediteranean Sea and the English Channel to the North. A perfect combination for access to water-body from every where. In the Summer it isn't too hot, thus making it pleasant for Sun-bathing and the seas around it swimmable. In the Winter it isn't too cold, but still good enough to snow a little. It is big enough to be important, but not too large be unable to unite people at emotional level. It is pretty developed with high standard of living Which other country in the World possibly has the climate, the location, the development and size/population combination that France has?

  • Answer:

I can't really disagree with any of your points and struggle to think of a better one. The biggest problem with the location of France is the closeness to French people, that's all I can think of. :-)

All I know is that being adjacent to Spain, England, and Germany has caused a lot of trouble for France over the years, and in that order.

I hadn't thought about this before but you might be right. It's a compelling argument. I'd also add that in addition to the positives you've listed France doesn't have much in the way of geographic negatives. It's not affected by natural disasters like earthquakes, bushfires or hazardous climactic conditions. And it's geography means it's free of the sort of unpleasant spiders, snakes, crocodiles, bears etc that can make other locations unnecessarily interesting.

France was unfortunate in one sense to be located with the Imperial United Kingdom on one side and militaristic Germany on the other. The other way of looking at it is that it was precisely France's ideal location that led Germany and England to fight over it. I used to live in Zurich and every time I went to the train station I thought that if your interest is exploring Europe, the ideal location is Switzerland. The problem is that Switzerland is boring. French people travel less outside of France than almost any other rich country. France is the #1 tourist destination. All retired dictators, political exiles, artists, and mega-yachts end up in France. It seems like the obvious choice.

There are better:  Britain, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand: isolation, natural resources, weather, topograpgy. Either the British knew how to pick (see: steal) colonies or really just lucked out.

I think so. W.r.t. things people like today, other countries like Spain might seem even more attractive (e.g. for warm and sunny weather). However what you're saying was very true historically: for most of Eurpean history (although not recently) France was by far the most populated and richest country in Europe, due to those outstanding geographical advantages. Crucially, it had a lot of top quality agricultural land, with a favourable climate, which could support a high population, unlike Spain. It does make you feel kind of special living here actually, when you are aware of this. It is like the cradle of European civilization (medieval European civilization, I'm not disputing the Greeks' and Romans' seniority otherwise). One has to reserve a special place for Medieval and Renaissance Italy too, of course.
