What are the jobs after BSc in biochemistry?

What kind of jobs should a guy with only a BSc in Mathematics apply to in order to increase the chances of getting hired?

  • Some more info: My degree is from a University in Mexico that is actually the second best in the country, sadly I live in NYC and no one has heard of it... Also, I do mean ONLY a BSC, most math jobs out there ask for an MS or PhD -I'm planning on getting one, but I have to pay the rent you know? Extra information: coding skills good, but limited to actual working experience with the following languages R and Mathematica; some knowledge of Python. Most jobs (once more) ask for at least advanced working knowledge and experience in C++, C or Java. The problem is not learning the new language, but getting "working experience" with it, at least that's how I feel about it. Thanks for the help!

  • Answer:

There are 2 paths to solving your problem that you can pursue, and I'd recommend doing both. The first is to figure out a job that you can get with today's resume that will give you the chance to learn skills to get a much better job in the future. Data science jobs are a good choice here, which in your case (NYC and not Silicon Valley) includes support positions in Wall Street firms. They tend to hire math and physics PhDs into their quant positions, but they also have support staff. The second is to participate in some open-source projects that would be real enough to count as working experience. For example, you could add something math-related to R or GNU Octave. That would give you a chance to write some C++ (as needed for performance reasons), and should include tests and docs and bugfixing so that you can show that you've done the complete life-cycle of software. For inspiration you could look at Matlab toolboxes that do things not currently available in R or Octave. When I hire people I value solid open-source contributions pretty highly, because I can examine the code and look to see if it has real usage.
