What is SKYPE?

Skype wants to upload my contacts to Skype network. I no longer trust Skype. What alternative to Skype would you suggest?

• After an update to the application on my phone, I now get a dialog message asking me to accept or decline. If I decline the application closes. "Skype contacts are stored securely on the Skype network so you can access them from all your devices". I do not want to upload my contacts to Skype. So bye bye Skype... But what alternatives are the to Skype, and what are your experiences?

• Answer:

  Just to be clear, your contacts from your local device are not being uploaded to Skype. The message is actually referring to your Skype contacts that are in the Skype application itself not your phone's address book. Your Skype contacts are already stored centrally so that changes are reflected when you move from one Skype application to another (mobile -> desktop etc) and this is covered by our privacy policy. The message was added to raise awareness and make sure that users know that their Skype contacts are stored centrally with Skype. The wording of the message is quite confusing so we're looking at alternatives to remove the confusion
